Welcome to McKell Elementary School
McKell Elementary School (MES) is located in the rolling hills of Northeastern Kentucky along U.S. 23 in South Shore, Kentucky.  It  has a school population of approximately 520 students and  has a faculty and staff of sixty-three.  MES houses sixteen Primary Level  (P1's-P4's) classrooms, six intermediate (Grades 4-5) classrooms, one FMD classroom, two Special Education units, a Family Resource Center, art and music classrooms, library media center and two Speech classrooms.  MES is one of seven schools which makes up the Greenup County School System.
 
Recent Events
  •  Our first annual Spooktacular reading night was a huge success with over 250 people attending. 
  • We had many wonderful costumes in the "Halloween Parade".
  • First nine week AR goal assembly, with 177 students meeting their goal.
  • Artist in residence with her Hungarian eggs, students were amazed at detail in such a small area.all Festival had a large turnout and fun had by all.
  • Veteran's Day Program, a small way for us to say thanks to all those who served.
  • McKell elementary had over 30 reading projects for our reading fair.
  • District reading fair with 3 McKell students winning their division, congrats!

​MES won $1000.00 worth of PE equipment from the Appalachian Partnership for Positive Living & Eating (APPLE). APPLE is sponsored by a grant through the Ashland-Boyd Co. Health Dept. Jennifer Klaiber presented the equipment to  the student body at MES along with apple stress balls. The students will also receive water bottles  next week. The APPLE Grant is a FREE family focused model to improve health and wellness. They offer FREE nutrition counseling, FREE personal training, FREE family counseling, and FREE GYM MEMBERSHIPS.
