Eighth grade science students are currently studying climate change and the ways scientists find data to show how conditions have changed over time. One way is by studying tree rings from trees that are several years old. The tree cross section the students studied is from a branch of a tree that is over 120 years old. Students counted the rings and found that the branch was between 70-80 years old. They also identified wide spaces between rings which show wet, rainy seasons and thin rings which show dry seasons. They learned that many Sequoia trees are over 3000 years old and provide scientists with centuries of data.
